Due to the increasing urbanization as a part of the societal transformation, Indian cities are growing into mega cities with increased economic activity and rising migrant population. Their demand for energy and resources is on rise and so is the inequity in services provision. With the climate change problem looming over and cities being the major contributors, it is important to have an integrated approach towards the sustainable pathways for city development. Such integration should focus on developing response strategies aiming at climate change control, building more resilient and ecologically sound habitats, provision of quality services that are equitable and improving the urban governance. IGIDR, in its Silver Jubilee Conference on Cities and Sustainability focuses on these key elements of urban sustainability.
