Abstract of Talk: The core of the talk will be on concepts, measures, data, and methods pertaining to urban environmental accounts. The talk will draw upon the work presented in EnviStats India and the challenges in the construction of accounts and indicators for tracking progress under Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) will be discussed. The relevance of SEEA for Urban SDG’s will be explained using examples. The importance of alt-data like Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) of the EU Joint Research Centre for construction of such indicators will be highlighted.
About the Speaker: An officer of the Indian Statistical Service, P Bhanumati is Deputy Director General, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India. She is presently posted in the Social Statistics Division. In recent years, she has extensively worked and also written on System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) – Experimental Ecosystem Accounting. She is associated with the publication of EnviStats India and was Project Manager on behalf of MoSPI on the Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (NCAVES) project in India. She is the chair of UNSD’s Working Group constituted for development of macro-indicators from the SEEA framework and was one of the co-chairs of the Virtual Expert Forum on Ecosystem Accounting conducted by UNSD in November 2020.
