Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES)

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), established by an initiative of the Japanese Government in 1998, is a research institute that conducts strategic policy research to develop practical and innovative policies and measures towards a sustainable Asia and the Pacific.

At present, IGES is conducting research projects on "Climate Policy", "Business and the Environment", "Biofuels", "Forest Conservation", "Freshwater", “Waste and Resources” and "Capacity Development and Education". IGES also promotes diverse initiatives for sustainable development in the region, including the Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) and the 3R initiative as well as conducting selected cross-cutting studies.

In addition to research activities, the Technical Support Unit (TSU) for the National Greenhouse Gas Inventories Programme (NGGIP) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Secretariat of the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) and the Japanese Center for International Studies in Ecology (JISE) come under the umbrella of IGES, and by such undertakings as the EcoAction 21 Certification and Registration System for advancing the environmental preservation efforts of small and medium enterprises, the field of IGES activities is becoming ever wider.

IGES conducts research activities at its research facilities not only in Japan but also in Bangkok, Thailand and Beijing, China.

IGES collaborates with a broad range of stakeholders, such as international organisations, national and local governments, non-governmental organisations, businesses and citizens’ groups, to carry out research and conduct outreach activities, aiming to ensure that the results are reflected both in the policy-making process and in the activities of business and citizens.
